I MAKE PUZZLES.

I craft cryptic experiences that prompt discovery, connection, joy, and revelation.

I collaborate with companies, brands, and individuals to manifest magical moments in the mundane for a wide range of audiences.

Puzzles are a pervasive mindset: anything might conceal a secret message or lead to hidden treasure. Stay curious, fellow adventurers.

WHAT I DO

  • ESCAPE ROOMS

Escape rooms are portals into alternate realities. They can tell powerful stories, dazzle with special effects, and place players in the center of it all with creative puzzles.

Over the past decade, I’ve played 900+ escape rooms in 20 countries. I’m a frequent contributor to Room Escape Artist, with over 300 reviews and dozens of articles on interactive experience design. I also teach workshops on escape room design.

  • PUZZLE HUNTS

In a puzzle hunt, puzzles can take any form, from a cocktail recipe to a papercraft sculpture to a strange audio file. These puzzles often don’t come with instructions; it’s up to the solver to notice patterns and peel back layer after layer of hidden meaning.

My team won the MIT Mystery Hunt in 2021 and 2025, and I’ve designed hundreds of custom puzzles for private clients.

  • IMMERSIVE ADVENTURES

I love experiences that blur the lines between fiction and reality, prompting participants to view the world through a lens of wonder.

Under the alias Mu, I’ve found 6,000+ letterboxes — a real-life treasure hunt meets public art exchange. I’ve fallen down deep rabbit holes of countless ARGs and armchair treasure hunts, both as a participant and a creator.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Matthew Stein is a wizard. His puzzles contain such genuinely surprising twists and turns, use so many unexpected techniques and approaches, your brain will be fried in the very best way. I am a huge fan.

— Avery Monsen, author of All My Friends Are Dead

Matthew’s puzzles have sparkle and wit, and the process of commissioning a puzzle experience was extremely fun. We wanted to build community and connections between our loved ones in different places, and the experience did exactly that, all framed in an experience filled with magic and surprise.

— Sarah L.

"Puzzle" almost doesn't seem like the right word — the experience was a multi-part adventure. All of the steps fit together and built on each other brilliantly and intricately, and made for a connecting, memorable, and delightful experience.

— Olivia L.

Matthew Stein '16 and the World of Interactive Puzzle Experiences

"On the surface, puzzles revolve around keeping secrets, yet they’re more about how we guide players to discover those secrets and shift their perception of the world around them... I don’t think I ever really lost the belief that we can—and should—interact with each other in a playful, wondrous, open-eyed way."

‘Tangram’ Design Journal Invites You Into a World of Wonder and Play

“A puzzle — in the style presented in Tangram — is a highly dynamic experience contained within a static artifact. What may appear to be a series of words, numbers, or images can prompt the solver to venture down deep research rabbit holes, to transcend and physically transform the printed page, or even to find hidden treasure.”

‘Clue’ comes to S.F. Playhouse with an extra mystery attached

“What’s great about a puzzle is that it forces people to connect… I really think that coming out of three years of pandemic shutdown, where we just haven't really been spending time with each other, this is just going to be such a fun way to get reconnected. And, really, who doesn’t love a mystery?”
